The Short Version
Our read on Pepe
PEPE launched in April 2023 as an anonymous ERC-20 token on Ethereum. It accumulated a multi-billion dollar market cap within weeks of launch — one of the fastest market cap ascents in crypto history. The token is based on "Pepe the Frog," an internet meme created by artist Matt Furie in 2005 that has been widely used in internet culture.
PEPE is the third generation of successful meme coins: Dogecoin (first generation, 2013, Shiba Inu dog meme) and Shiba Inu (second generation, 2020, positioned as "the Dogecoin killer") preceded it. Each generation amplified the previous: DOGE inspired SHIB, and SHIB's massive 2021 gains inspired a wave of meme coins including PEPE.
Unlike DOGE (which has evolved merchant payment use cases) and SHIB (which developed the SHIB ecosystem with ShibaSwap and Shibarium), PEPE has explicitly not developed utility. This is a deliberate positioning choice: PEPE is pure meme culture, not a project with a roadmap.
- Launch: April 2023, anonymous team, no pre-sale or VC allocation.
- Stated utility: explicitly none — whitepaper states "no utility, entertainment purposes only."
- Burn mechanism: 6.9% of initial supply permanently burned to dead address.
- Chain: Ethereum ERC-20.
- Cultural base: PEPE the Frog meme — one of the most recognisable internet memes globally.
The Meme Coin Model
Why no-utility tokens have value
The standard financial analysis framework — discounted cash flows, fundamental value, utility — does not apply to meme coins. PEPE's value is entirely a function of: community size and enthusiasm; trading activity and speculative demand; meme cultural resonance; and the expectation of other buyers in the future (the "greater fool" dynamic).
This does not make PEPE valueless — it simply means the value drivers are different from utility tokens. Community engagement, meme virality, and trading activity are the real "fundamentals" for a meme coin. PEPE scores highly on all three: its meme has deep cultural penetration, its trading volume is consistently in the top tier of ERC-20 tokens by volume, and its community has demonstrated sustained activity.
The critical question for meme coin speculation is not "what is this worth fundamentally?" but "will more people want to buy this than sell it in my time horizon?" This is a social and momentum question, not a fundamental analysis question.
Comparison with DOGE and SHIB
The three generations of meme coin
Dogecoin was created in 2013 as a joke. It has evolved to have genuine merchant payment utility and is the most widely recognised meme coin brand globally. DOGE has the backing of Elon Musk's public endorsements, which have created significant price volatility tied to Musk's public activity.
Shiba Inu launched in 2020 as a DOGE competitor and developed a more extensive ecosystem: ShibaSwap (DEX), Shibarium (Layer 2), and a token ecosystem (SHIB, LEASH, BONE). SHIB made the case that meme coins could develop genuine infrastructure.
PEPE took the opposite direction from SHIB — explicitly rejecting utility development to remain purely a cultural token. Whether this is a more honest or less sophisticated approach depends on perspective. PEPE's market cap success suggests the market does not require utility narratives to assign significant value to culturally resonant meme tokens.
The Risks
The specific risks of meme coin investing
Meme coin risks differ from utility token risks. The primary risks are: sentiment reversal — meme momentum can reverse as quickly as it builds; no fundamental floor — without utility, there is no fundamental value preventing total loss; concentration risk — meme coins often have concentrated whale holdings that can cause rapid price impact on large sells.
PEPE-specific risks include: the anonymous founding team retained a portion of tokens that could be sold; the PEPE the Frog meme has been associated with controversial internet subcultures (though Matt Furie, the original artist, has consistently distanced the character from those associations); and the total supply of 420 trillion tokens creates very different price psychology than Bitcoin-style scarce supply.
The cases
Bull case and bear case
Bull case
- PEPE the Frog is one of the most recognisable internet memes globally — deep cultural penetration.
- No VC or pre-sale allocation — fairer initial distribution than many tokens with institutional backers.
- Explicit no-utility honesty may attract investors who distrust utility narratives in other meme coins.
- Deep exchange liquidity on Binance, Bybit, and OKX supports trading activity without large slippage.
- Consistent top-tier trading volume demonstrates sustained community engagement.
Bear case
- No utility means there is no fundamental value floor — total loss is a realistic scenario.
- Meme momentum can reverse rapidly and unpredictably.
- Anonymous team retained an initial supply tranche — insider selling risk is real.
- Multiple competing meme coins (new ones launch constantly) fragment community attention.
- PEPE the Frog's cultural associations are complex and could create reputational friction.
